Earth Science Week 2017

Earth Science Week 2017 is on soon. Join in from October 8-14, 2017 and celebrate the theme “Earth and Human Activity.” This year’s event, the 20th annual Earth Science Week celebration, promotes awareness of what geoscience tells us about human interaction with the planet’s natural systems and processes.

SciFest 2017

The SciFest video conferencing festival is in August and provides a great link to National Science Week. Now in it’s fouth year SciFest is a great opportunity to engage your students in a variety of science workshops and events.

Overview: Lloyd Godson is an ambassador for ocean exploration committed to encouraging more young Australians to undertake STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) studies and careers. He is also no stranger to marine expeditions. He has spent a total of one month living underwater, propelled himself through the Greek islands in a human-powered submarine and holds the Guinness World Records for the most electricity generated by pedalling underwater.

NAIDOC Week 2017

This year the theme for NAIDOC 2017 is ‘Our Languages Matter’ focusing on the importance, richness and resilience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Languages. Before European settlement there were over 250 unique Aboriginal Language groups with over 600 dialects. Today only around 120 of those languages are still spoken and many are at risk of being lost as Elders pass away. 

Language is more than just a means to communicate, it is a way maintaining cultural practice and passing on knowledge to future generations. Europeans could not see the value of Indigenous language and enforced the use of the English language. Aboriginal people were forbidden to speak in their languages, punished, and even removed from their families and traditional land.

Clean Up Australia

Get ready for Clean Up Australia Day with a series of video conferences from the Australian Museum and Australian National Maritime Museum.

Since 1992, school communities across Australia have demonstrated their support for caring for the environment through participating in Schools Clean Up Day.

So far 2,223 primary schools and 1,119 youth groups have removed rubbish from locations right across the country.

Pirate School From Cyberspace Attacks!

Cook and Banks: Charting the rumoured great southern land

The Royal Botanic Gardens and the Australian National Maritime Museum recently offered 6 virtual excursions looking at Cook, the voyage of HMB Endeavour and Banks the botany and plant classification. The collaboration began as a special presentation linked to the RBG 200th birthday celebrations.

The sessions on Wednesday 18th May were offered through DARTconnections and sold out very quickly and more spaces were added. The Thursday 19th May sessions were offered through Electroboard.  The content was written by Mary Bell RBG and Anne Doran ANMM with Kieran Hosty an ANMM Maritime Archaeologist and Mary Bell presenting.

The students were very engaged with the content as it extended what they had been learning in the classroom. The questions they asked, clearly demonstrated that they had been thinking about what had been presented during the sessions and having Kieran who had dived on the wreck sites to give that extra insight was very useful. He may have inspired students to think about archaeology as a career.

The RBG and ANMM are considering offering this cross curriculum program again next year, to support teachers in the classroom and provide access to experts from both organisation. The program reached almost 1000 students.

NAIDOC Week 2016

NAIDOC Week 2016 is held in the first week of July. It is a time to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and an opportunity to recognise the contributions that Indigenous Australians make to our country and our society.

This years theme is Songlines: The living narrative of our nation

For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, the Dreamtime describes a time when the earth, people and animals were created by our ancestral spiritual beings. They created the rivers, lakes, plants, land formations and living creatures. Dreaming tracks crisscross Australia and trace the journeys of our ancestral spirits as they created the land, animals and lores. These dreaming tracks are sometimes called ‘Songlines’ as they record the travels of these ancestral spirits who ‘sung’ the land into life.

To recognise NAIDOC week the Australian National Maritime Museum and the Australian Museum are presenting a series of video conferences to schools.

Cook and Banks: Charting the rumoured great Southern Land

To celebrate the Royal Botanical Gardens Sydney 200th anniversary, the Australian National Maritime Museum and Royal Botanical Gardens Sydney will offering a joint video conference for year 3 and 4 students History and Science. Cook and Banks: Charting the rumoured great Southern Land is a free video conference which will outline Cook and Banks voyage on the HMB Endeavour.  It will be presented by Kieran Hosty from the Australian National Maritime Museum and Louisa Murray from Royal Botantical Gardens Sydney.

The video conference will investigate the story behind Cook and Banks’ voyage to the rumoured great Southern Land and include topics such as:

  • The reason behind the momentous voyage.
  • The voyage and conditions on board the  HMB Endeavour.
  • Cook’s role as a cartographer and navigator.
  • Banks’ scientific contribution to the voyage and how his legacy began the Royal Botanic Gardens’ Herbarium collection.
  • Learn how scientists classify plants and try your hand at botanic illustration.
  • The enduring outcome of the voyage and how it changed Australian history.

We will be offering six sessions of the Cook and Banks virtual excursion. Three sessions will be offered on Dart connections (May 18th at 9.30am 11.30am and 2.00pm) and another three on Electroboard (May 19th  9.30am,11.30am and 2.00pm).

The Australian National Maritime Museum offers a great range of video and web conferences for schools throughout the year. They are starting the year with 2 events the Women in Science Symposium and Frank Hurley – the Man Who Made History.

Women in Science Symposium at the Australian National Maritime Museum

For international Women’s Day the Australian National Maritime Museum, in partnership with the University of New South Wales is hosting a Women in Science Symposium. The aim is to encourage high school girls to look beyond the lab coats and to see the possibilities for careers in science.

Chaired by Scientia Professor Veena Sahajwalla, UNSW, the morning session will have a range of speakers from diverse areas including marine science, climate, ecology and innovation.
A live web stream of the presentation is being offered.

Frank Hurley – The Man Who Made History

The Australian National Maritime Museum is delighted to present a special program for students studying the Frank Hurley documentary as a prescribed text for the Discovery Area of Study.

Meet the film makers Simon Nasht and Anna Cater to hear how they approached dealing with the subject matter, constructing the story and making the film. The talk will be followed by a Q & A where students will have the chance to ask Simon and Anna questions about their film and learn about the available HSC study resources.
